Have you ever walked into a show, knowing that it’s going to be good, and then walk out of the venue in complete shock with how amazing the performance actually was, and how it exceeded all expectations?
Yep. That’s exactly the experience after a MUNA show. The LA based trio have embarked on their Saves The World tour and made a stop at Constellation Room at the Observatory in Santa Ana on the night of September 20th to perform to a filled-to-capacity room with some of their most avid SoCal fans. At 9pm, we saw Naomi, Josette, and Katie emerge from the side door of the venue onto a foggy stage. As soon as they took their places, the drumsticks clicked to queue the beginning of their set as “Number One Fan” blasted through the speakers, as the crowd sang along, completely captivated by the girls' energetic performance.
The night continued with songs from their new album, which also happens to be the title of the tour Saves The World. Some of the songs included: “Stayaway”, “Never”, “Navy Blue”, “Pink Light”, “Hands Off”, and “Who”. The set also included some of their popular songs from Around U, such as “Winterbreak”, “Everything”, “Loudspeaker”, “Around U”, and “I Know A Place”.
Slowing down the set, Katie was handed her acoustic guitar as she commented how they were going to have their "Dixie Chicks moment" before singing "Taken".
Throughout the night the girls paused in between sets to talk to their audience. Katie mentioned how that day was the first day of the Global Climate Change Strikes, and how she dragged her bandmates to the local strike in Tustin. Mentioning casually that “there was not a whole lot of people there”, as the audience laughed.
Naomi interjected saying how Katie tends to drag her to these “events”, and it ends up being a total of 15 people.
The girls also spoke about the meaning behind their newest album. According to Katie, vocalist of the band, the album is raw and tackles subjects that people don't really want to talk about. She commended the audience for listening to their music, because it's deep stuff—and was written in a time where the members went through significant life changes that had to be made, but only made their bond stronger. The band expressed that in singing those songs, they were saving the world, and how people in listening to them are in fact, saving the world as well.
Katie’s speech resonated with the band’s diverse audience. This was no cookie cutter show, but instead included people of all different backgrounds, ages, genders and races. It was refreshing to see such a diverse crowd share the love of deep meaningful music from such a talented performers.
MUNA's set had no shortage of fun, in between the highs and lows throughout the night. The setlist went in waves of highly energetic songs, to slower more melodic ones that brought you down to reality, only to be pumping your feet minutes later to the beat of another fast track. It was a rollercoaster of flawlessly arranged songs that complimented each-other to perfection. Ending the night on a deep note, MUNA parted the stage with "It's Gonna Be Okay, Baby", leaving their fans star-struck and raving about how great their performance was as they exited the Constellation Room. We wouldn't be surprised if some of the Orange County fans made their way up to the girl's LA show, as it is without a doubt worth seeing them twice.
If we could give them more than 5 stars, we would. Until next time, MUNA.
